The University of Hannover is the second largest university in the state of Lower Saxony, with more than 20,000 students. Established in 1831, the University is divided into 9 schools and offers approximately 80 fields of study.
Hannover is a mid-size northern German town of 500,000 inhabitants, not far from Berlin and Hamburg. It is known to be a modern, green, and safe and secure city. Many company headquarters are located here and the world's biggest IT-Fair takes place in Hannover.
Largely destroyed by World War II, the city has been rebuilt in exemplary modern fashion and has been called a masterpiece of advanced planning--combining parks and tree-lined streets with bold and imaginative solutions for the city's traffic problems. Hannover is known for its parks and gardens, the most famous of which is the Herrenhauser Gärten (Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen), beautifully preserved in the Baroque style. In 2011, Hannover was voted the greenest big city in Germany.
Course of Study
The Science & Engineering Research Projects program gives students the opportunity to achieve practical scientific knowledge as part of a professional research team at Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany (member of TU9, nine German universities with excellence in Engineering, Technology, and Science. These nine universities enjoy high esteem both in Germany and worldwide). Natural science and engineering students, especially from the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, will be fully integrated within their designated institute for at least 8 weeks (more common 12 weeks).
After introduction and acquisition of basic principles at the specific field of interest, participants will work under the supervision of an experienced scientist. As needed, participants will learn how to use laboratory equipment as well as software tools for simulation or data application issues.
At the end of program terms a presentation will be held, and, upon request, a project thesis will be written for further scientific use. In addition, company visits and social activities will be provided during the program. On demand, a German language class can be booked separately.
Topics Covered Include:
- Synthesis and characterization of superparamagnetic colloidal nanocrystals
- Numerical and/or experimental investigation of dynamics and vibration in the fields of turbomachinery, tire development or smart materials (e.g. piezoelectrics, shape memory alloys)
- Design and setup of laser systems, highly stable cavities or molecular traps
- Magnetic Field Sensor (GMR effect, magnetic flux concentrators)
- Epigenetic studies on stem cells: Cryopreservation techniques
- Automotive mechatronics
Credits earned at foreign institutions are transferable to UNL by departmental validation. Please see "earning credit" page on UNL Education Abroad site for more information.
This program is open to undergraduate and graduate UNL students in good academic standing. You must apply through Leibniz Universität Hannover. The application procedure and deadline is found here. Their application is typically due in mid-January.
Accommodations and Other Arrangements
Students in Hannover will be accommodated in halls of residence. For the most part, there are single rooms in shared apartments/hall communities with shared sanitary rooms/kitchens, but some apartments are also available. All rooms are completely furnished.
The Mensa, the student cafeteria, provides full meals at low prices and is located on the University campus.

Explanation of Costs
Students pay the cost of tuition-fees directly to Leibniz University. Students will be charged through MyRed the $150 study abroad fee.
