Course of Study

Participants will be traveling to two countries as part of this education abroad program – Ireland (Dublin) and the United Kingdom (London). Participants will be attending the Euro CHRIE 2018 hospitality education conference in Dublin.This international conference attracts faculty, industry leaders, students and vendors from Europe, Middle East and Asia. It is an educational as well as a networking opportunity for Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM) students, allowing them to glean relevant knowledge, and explore potential internships and employment opportunities. Interactions with hospitality and tourism industry in Ireland and the United Kingdom will include visits to several world-class hotels, food & beverage establishments, and event venues. Students will also learn about tourism and hospitality by visiting major attractions and hospitality businesses in London.

Learning Outcomes: This program will challenge students to:

  • Broaden perspective & global understanding of culture, hospitality & tourism, history, economy, food, tradition and education;
  • Increase intellectual and practical skills such as: inquiry and analysis, critical and creative thinking, written and oral communication, teamwork and problem solving;
  • Develop intercultural competencies so students can move across boundaries and unfamiliar territory to see the world from multiple perspectives; and
  • Increase personal and social responsibility through enhancing skills for lifelong learning.

Course Credit

Students will earn three regular UNL credit hours for HRTM 495 or HRTM 895.


Students must be in good standing with the University and have a minimum GPA of a 2.5. Preference may be given to students in the Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management major.


Faculty Leaders

D. JhaDipra Jha, Assistant Professor of Practice, Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management ( Dipra has extensive experience developing and leading education abroad programs. He has successfully led /co-led programs to India , United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, India Interdisciplinary  and Oman & United Arab Emirates. He is a member of the CEHS International Advisory Council. Dipra has been recognized by Education Abroad with two Smooth Sailing Awards for his contributions to international education at UNL. He is the first UNL faculty to complete the four-part education abroad leader certification series. Dipra has been working with Euro CHRIE 2018 host campus Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) to develop this education abroad program in conjunction with the conference.

Shannon RowenShannon Rowen, Assistant Professor of Practice, Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management ( Shannon has extensive experience developing and leading study tours. She has successfully led /co-led programs to New York City  and Augusta National Masters Tournament in Georgia. She is working on completion of the four-part education abroad leader certification series.


London, the capital of England, is often regarded as the world's most visited city. London is home to a diverse range of people and is regarded as a world leader in the arts, education, research, development, tourism, and transportation.

Accommodations and Other Arrangements

INTERNATIONAL AIRFARE: All program participants will fly to and from Europe as a group. Deviations from the group itinerary will not be permitted. 
LODGING in COUNTRY: Students will be staying in double rooms in hotels in both Dublin and London.
MEALS in COUNTRY: Most meals will be included in the conference registration and breakfast will be included at each hotel. Students will be responsible for a few meals on their own. 
TRANSPORTATION in COUNTRY: Most transportation is included in the group cost: airport transfers and group tours. Students will be responsible for some local transportation via public bus or subway.
ACCESS to LAUNDRY FACILITIES: Laundry is available at the hotels for a fee.
COMMUNICATION & CONNECTIVITY: WiFi will be available at the hotels and conference. Students will also communicate with leaders via a group WhatsApp as needed.
DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED for TRAVEL: All U.S. citizens will need a valid passport to participate on the program. Non-U.S. citizens need to research entry requirements specific to the country of destination at the time of applying to the program. Deadline to upload passport to MyWorld: August 15, 2018.
HEALTH AND MOBILITY: Participants may be asked to walk long distances given the size of the cities within the program itinerary. The streets within the cities are generally smooth, but there may be some hills and cobblestone streets. Weather can be cloudy and raining and umbrellas should be a must when packing! You may want to bring waterproof shoes and make sure to dress in layers while abroad. Recommended immunizations/medications per CDC (as of February 19, 2018) include the Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccine. CDC recommends that you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and your yearly flu shot. Please be sure to check the CDC for additional recommended immunizations.

Upon confirmation of participation, program participants will pay a $1000 Commitment Deposit (including a non-refundable $150 Education Abroad Fee). The $1000 deposit will be applied to the final program cost balance. If a participant withdraws from the program, the participant will be responsible for any irrecoverable costs associated with the program at the time of withdrawal. The deposit payment will be due on May 15, 2018.
